Common Washing Machine Mistakes

Keep your washing machine running well by avoiding these mistakes.

Laundry is one of life's daily tasks, but it doesn't have to be a frustrating one. By avoiding common washing machine mistakes, you can save time, energy, and even keep your clothes looking their best. Don't overload your washer, use the correct amount of detergent and avoid using too much bleach can help you avoid energy waste and prevent damage to your clothes. If you're unsure about any of these tips, our team of experts is here to help.

Make sure you don't overload your washer. Washers are now bigger and we often try and get our clothes done quickly - sometimes we add additional pieces of clothing until we end up adding to many clothes into the tub.  Large capacity washers do have limits. If a washer is full of too many clothes - detergent and water may not reach everything - then dirt is not removed because its trapped - and thus clothes do not get clean.  Overloading can also cause  wear on your washer - plus excess wrinkles in your clothes.

Make sure to follow detergent directions and measure and use the appropriate amount. If you do not put in enough detergent your clothes will not be clean at the optimal level.

One cycle does not work at its potential for all types of clothing. Read your manual and learn what your cycle options are and what fabrics and colors are best for each cycle type.

Most Washers have a dispenser for detergent, fabric softener or both. Remove and rinse them out thoroughly and often. Build up in the dispensers is not good for cleaning or the machine. At the end of wash cycle, leave the detergent drawer/dispenser open so any water remaining in the area will evaporate - moisture that is left after the cycle can cause odors, mildew, mold, etc.

f you can't or don't turn off water to your machine when you are out of town or not doing laundry for any extended period of time - the most important thing you can do is replace standard rubber hoses for braided ones. Rubber hoses dry out, split, crack and braided hoses are more durable and don't dry out.
